3 Mistakes to Avoid When Planning Your Basement Remodel

Basement Remodel

These are 3 mistakes we recommend avoiding when planning your basement remodel.

Your basement remodel might be the final step in completing your home theater plans or opening up a guest bedroom, but there are a few common mistakes people make that can be devastating. Basements carry a lot of moisture. So before getting your lighting down right, and picking out the perfect sectional sofa, make sure you don’t fall into the trap of these common basement remodel mistakes.

Leaving Your Basement Flood or Moisture Prone

A flooded basement is an absolute nightmare. Unfortunately, basements are susceptible to flooding–or at least excessive unwanted water. Don’t finish a basement without checking for weaknesses regarding flooding or moisture. To do the best job, make sure there’s some form of drainage, a reliable sump pump, and some dehumidification. Keep in mind that being unprepared for moisture can lead to disaster in the long term. Floods can destroy your basement entirely, and moisture can lead to dangerous, and frankly disgusting, mold.

Using Organic Materials

Speaking of mold, much like you and I, mold needs food to survive. Materials like wood, cork, bamboo, and even fiberglass all contain organic compounds. When these organic compounds combine with moisture–which, even if you have a dehumidifier and sump pump may still be a problem–they give mold the perfect conditions to start growing. It can absolutely ruin your new paint job within the course of a few weeks, rendering your basement remodel a waste of time.

Disregarding Soundproofing

Some folks may insist that soundproofing your basement is an option entirely dependent on what you’re going to use your remodeled basement for. Obviously, if you’re going to use it as a recording studio or a home entertainment hub, you may need to soundproof the space. What a lot of people don’t realize though is that your basement is close to a ton of your home’s mechanical systems, which are going to be loud. If you don’t want to deal with the constant humming of your home’s mechanical systems, make sure you include soundproofing in your basement remodel plans.
