5 Things to Know BEFORE Basement Remodeling

Basement Remodeling

Basement remodeling in Frederick, Maryland boasts a pretty substantial return on investment – 74.7%, which is greater than bathroom and kitchen remodeling.

An unfinished basement is…well, unfinished. It’s a blank canvas waiting for a homeowner’s artistic flair. Is it a family room? Could it be a game room? What about a media room or even a spare bedroom? The choice is yours. The only thing we know for sure is that basement remodeling WILL add value to your home. In fact, basement remodeling in Frederick, Maryland boasts a pretty substantial return on investment – 74.7%. That is greater than both bathroom remodeling (70%) and kitchen remodeling (70.8%). But before you dive into this home improvement project, there are a few things you need to know.

5 Basement Remodeling Tips

Moisture Issues

Unfinished basements are notoriously bad with moisture. They are underground (duh!) and are simply not designed to keep moisture out. So before you even think about finishing your basement, it is important to resolve any water issues. Obvious signs include:

  • Pools or puddle of water
  • Water droplets or moisture on the walls
  • Mold

Add a Vapor Barrier and Offset Space

Even after you have resolved any moisture issues, you still need to do more. A vapor barrier, applies to walls and floors before framing, is designed to keep your finished basement nice and dry. Still, this may not be enough to keep every bit of moisture away. This is why it is recommended that you create a slight offset from the outside wall by adding thin slats of wood or metal called furring strips.

Fasteners

Not too fast..eners. When framing your basement walls, you need to fasten them to the existing structure of the home. Unfortunately regular old nails and screws just won’t do it, because your basement walls and floors are most likely concrete block, brick, or some other sort of masonry. You’ll need to get the proper fastener and possibly anchors for your wall type.

Insulation

Insulation both helps regulate temperature and moisture. That’s what we like to call a win-win! Choose an insulation that includes a vapor barrier on both sides.

Permitting!

Did you get the proper permits? Is your design up to code for your area? Check with your local municipality to make sure you have all of your ducks in a row, as they say. This is particularly important if your basement remodeling project includes electrical or plumbing work.

Does this seem like a lot? It is. So why not leave all of the hard work to the professionals?
