Determining If You Should Have a Deck Repair or Deck Replacement

Determining If You Should Have a Deck Repair or Deck Replacement

Today, we’ll help you decide if a deck repair or deck replacement is a better idea.

When you first build a deck, it will be able to handle the heavy use it gets, as well as whatever weather conditions come its way. With enough use, though, your deck will begin getting worn down, especially if you aren’t taking time to maintain it. You’ll reach a point at which you need to decide if repairing your deck is feasible, or if you have to replace it entirely. So which choice should you make? Today, we’ll help you decide if a deck repair or deck replacement is a better idea.

When to Get a Deck Repair

There are various parts of your deck that can become damaged. One of the main concerns is when the boards start to get weakened. Deck boards can get worn down by weather or by accident. The damage to your boards could be splintering, cracking, or rotting, among other things.

Fortunately, this damage can be isolated to just a couple of boards sometimes. If the damage hasn’t spread to a large number of boards on your deck, it’s reasonable for you to make a deck repair by fixing up the select few boards that are damaged. You can just swap out the affected boards instead of getting a whole new deck.

Another area that can get damaged is the railing of your deck. Railings get worn down over time, just like deck boards. As people grab them to assist in climbing up and down stairs, deck railings begin to loosen. To remedy this problem, you’ll likely just need to tighten the railings, though replacing the railing could be required, depending on the scale of the damage.

When to Get a Deck Replacement

Sometimes, a deck repair is simply not the most ideal option. Perhaps you’ve already tried to repair your deck multiple times, but without any lasting success. If your deck gets damaged constantly, and nothing you do to fix it seems to help, you might need to replace your deck entirely so that it stays in good condition in the long run.

Something else you might notice is that your deck shakes and sways while you’re walking on it. This indicates that your deck posts are weakening and coming loose. If you’ve noticed that your deck posts are damaged in any way, don’t use your deck until you are able to get those posts replaced.
